Most of us know someone like this, usually male and almost always white. He is enamored with and overvalues his “contribution to society”, while at the same time is terrified with the rapid diminishment of the white male privilege he views as his birthright. This toxic vacillation between ego and anxiety results in passive-aggressive punishment of those few unlucky souls he is still in a position to punish—hard-working people in the service industry, in this case.
